Greed and the online seller scams…

I’m in the market for a camera, nothing flash (no pun), just an older model that has a full frame sensor.

Got tired of ebay as there’s some real vacuum heads on there, so thought I’d try gumtree.

Found the camera body for sale that I’m aiming for, it was listed about £80 over what my budget is, but it had a decent shutter count and it came with a lens, “A 25-15mm lens”
Sounds good, well looked after by the pics, so I clicked on the link from the search to have a closer look.
The picture on the search result has a lens with a red ring around it attached to the camera, which means the lens is known as legacy glass, hence the L symbol.
These are top notch lenses, so this would be a great price and well worth stretching a bit of extra dosh out for.

5 pictures, all had the red ringed lens attached to the camera, the first three pictures were just the red ringed lens.
I looked for the L symbol after the lens specs, but it was photographed at such an angle, so it couldn’t be seen!
Pic 1 – camera and red ringed lens.
Pic 2 – camera and red ringed lens
Pic 3 – camera and red ringed lens
All taken to obscure the L symbol on the lens.
Pic 4 – camera and red ringed lens, but now another plain lens (not legacy glass) has appeared at the side of the red ringed lens?
Pic 5 – same again, camera with red ringed lens attached, then to the side a plain lens.

So I read the bumph the seller puts with his advert…
“Camera comes with a 25-105mm lens”

They don’t do a 25-105 lens, they do a bog standard 28-105 lens though, that looks exactly the same as the plain lens that appears on the last two pics!
What a crock! How misleading is that!

Next up… the “No wonder you live in a big house” Greedy seller

It’s not enough for some to just sell something on, they believe they have the right to get what they paid for it, or as near as dammit.
If this means ripping someone off, then so-be-it.

Camera on gumtree, again a bit over the odds, but looks well cared for and in good nick, “Selling for my dad who’s in his 80s and wants a lighter camera set up” – ok nothing wrong with that.
“Only selling as I use a higher end camera and I have a camera for a back up already and I don’t need three cameras!”

Sounds promising… “Open to sensible offers” fair enough.
I logged on to ebay to have a look what the shutter count was going for on there…
Hold on a mo, that looks exactly like the picture I’ve just been looking at???
Click on the link, it is, there are, the exact same photographs as on gumtree sale advert.
Read the spiel, yep exactly the same, identical, word for word. Nothing wrong there.
But wait… the price?
It’s £80 more expensive (also open to sensible offers) on ebay?

Click on ebay profile to see other items for sale…
Wait, there’s also another camera for sale, even higher spec with the exact same spiel about his dad and not wanting to have three cameras!
Back to gumtree to view his profile there, sure enough, there’s this higher spec camera for sale with the exact same spiel.
On gumtree though, this camera is £100 cheaper (open to offers) than on his ebay account (also open to offers)

I’m tempted to put an offer in on ebay for the camera, at £130 less than the ebay starting price, (£80 less to match the gumtree price listing plus another £50 less as it’s a sensible offer for the decade old camera)
Attaching the message, “My offer is the same as you are offering it for on gumtree minus another £50 to reduce the camera to it’s current going rate, you robbing dog!”

I say tempted, but what’s the point, when the seller is a greedy brainfart, who lives in a big house because he’s happy to mislead people so he can make extra profit!

Maybe auction websites should have an option for viewers of their adverts to comment and have it published under their sales bumph!
Mine would simply say, “This item is being sold by the same seller on gumtree for £80 less than his starting price here”
